Historic Knoxville Stamped Concrete Alleyway Reconstruction by Crescostone
Crescostone completed a stamped concrete alleyway reconstruction project in historic downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, near South Gay Street, Church Avenue, and the well-known Oarsman sculpture.
The project involved extensive demolition and excavation, followed by site preparation and installation of decorative concrete designed to complement the surrounding historic architecture.
Working for a longstanding commercial client, our crew transformed the deteriorated alleyway surfaces into red, herringbone brick-pattern stamped concrete with a custom antiqued appearance.
The finished work combines the visual character of traditional brick paving with a newly constructed concrete surface.
Project Overview

Completed: August 2026
Extensive Demolition Beneath the Historic Alleyways
One of the biggest challenges of this project was what we discovered beneath the existing surfaces.
The alleyway contained several layers of material installed over many years, including brick, asphalt, and exceptionally hard concrete.
In some areas, removal extended approximately two feet below the original surface.
Our crew used heavy equipment to break through and remove the old materials. Sections of concrete proved particularly difficult to demolish, requiring larger equipment to complete the excavation.
Because the project was located in an established downtown area, the work also required careful attention to neighboring buildings, utilities, pedestrian access, and surrounding property.

Site Preparation, Grading & Concrete Installation
Following demolition and material removal, Crescostone prepared the excavated areas for the new decorative concrete surfaces.
Our crew performed grading, leveling, and aggregate base preparation while addressing site drainage considerations.
Working within an established downtown environment required coordinating the new concrete surfaces with surrounding elevations and existing infrastructure.
Once the preparation was complete, our team placed the new concrete and began the decorative finishing process.

Herringbone Brick-Pattern Stamped Concrete
The decorative finish was an important part of this project.
Crescostone installed brick-red stamped concrete featuring a traditional herringbone brick pattern selected to complement the character of historic downtown Knoxville.
The pattern recreates the appearance of individual brick pavers through a continuous stamped concrete surface.
Rather than producing a uniform, freshly colored appearance, our team applied a custom antiquing technique to introduce tonal variation and the visual depth associated with aged brickwork.
The result is a distinctive decorative surface that fits naturally into the surrounding historic setting.

Completed Decorative Concrete Alleyway in Downtown Knoxville
The completed alleyway reconstruction replaced deteriorated, layered surfaces with new decorative concrete designed to complement the area’s historic surroundings.
The red herringbone brick pattern and antiqued finish provide a traditional appearance while showcasing the versatility of modern decorative concrete construction.
Located near the Museum of East Tennessee History, the Knox County Public Library, and The Oarsman sculpture, the project is now part of the pedestrian environment in one of Knoxville’s most recognizable downtown areas.
For Crescostone, this project demonstrates the combination of demolition capabilities, site preparation, concrete construction, and specialized decorative finishing required for complex urban projects.

Decorative Concrete Craftsmanship in a Historic Setting
Not every decorative concrete project begins with a clean, open construction site.
This downtown Knoxville project required substantial removal of existing materials, specialized equipment, careful preparation, and detailed finishing work within an established urban environment.
Crescostone handled these phases as a coordinated construction project, from the initial demolition through the finished decorative surfaces.
We appreciate the continued confidence of our longstanding client and the opportunity to contribute our workmanship to this historic area of Knoxville.
